Where to stay at i-City. Six towers, two clocks, and no single ticket.

i-City is six towers, not one building

People book “a place at i-City” the way you would book a hotel, and then arrive to find a precinct with six residential towers in it. Which one you are in decides more about the trip than the flat does, so it is the first thing worth getting right.

Three came first, i-Residence, i-Soho and i-Suite. Three came later and were named after cities: Liberty for New York, Parisien for Paris, and Hyde for London's Hyde Park. All six were built by i-City Properties, the property arm of I-Berhad, which is also the company behind the theme park.

Mine are Hyde and Liberty, which is not a coincidence, they are the two nearest the covered walk into the mall, and that walk is the single thing that makes a stay here easy. It means dinner, groceries and a cinema without moving the car or opening an umbrella, which in Shah Alam in the late afternoon is not a small point.

The two clocks, and how to plan around them

i-City runs on two clocks, and knowing that is most of what makes a day here work. The water park is the daytime half. WaterWorld opens at eleven and closes at six, so if that's on your list, do it first, you'll still have the whole evening for everything else.

The dry side is built around the dark. Most of it opens between half past three and half past five and runs to eleven or midnight, which is when the light displays are worth seeing anyway. So the shape of a good day here is water in the morning, mall in the late afternoon, lights at night.

One thing worth putting in the calendar: WaterWorld is the only attraction that takes Tuesdays off, and not during school or public holidays. If the water park is the reason you're coming, pick another day and the rest of the trip is exactly the same.

What you'll pay

There's no gate ticket for i-City, and the lit walkways aren't on the price list. You pay for the things you go inside. Every attraction is priced on its own, with separate Malaysian and non-Malaysian rates.

Which means an evening here can cost RM15 or RM300 depending on what you pick. Worth agreeing over breakfast rather than at each counter.

Published rates from i-City's own ticket-pricing page, read 17 August 2026. Ranges cover different age bands and, for some attractions, weekday versus weekend. Prices move, treat these as the shape of the bill, not a quote.

How I'd spend a first visit

Five things, in order, and they're the ones I end up telling people over WhatsApp anyway.

1. Water park first, if it's on your list. It runs on the daytime clock and closes at six, so it goes at the front and everything else still fits behind it.
2. Then the mall. Central i-City is a few minutes' covered walk from both my flats, so it's also the answer to a wet afternoon, and it's where you'll eat.
3. Lights after dark, and go late. From about nine the day crowd starts thinning out. You queue for less and the photographs come out better. This is the single best reason to sleep inside the precinct rather than drive in for the evening.
4. Decide the tickets over breakfast. There's no one ticket that covers everything, so agreeing what you're actually doing beforehand saves the negotiation at each counter.
5. Leave the car where it is. Your bay is reserved and covered, and everything above is a shorter walk than it is a drive.

Getting here changed in June 2026

The LRT3 Shah Alam Line opened on 29 June 2026, and its Seksyen 7 Shah Alam station, which appears on some maps under its interim name, i-City / Hospital Shah Alam, sits about 650 metres from i-City itself, and 900 metres from Central i-City mall if you walk it through CentralWalk. That is eight to twelve minutes on foot depending which end you are heading for, or a feeder bus from Entrance B if it's raining.

That is genuinely new. Until this year the only sensible way into i-City was to drive or book a Grab. The line runs from Bandar Utama down through Shah Alam to Klang, UiTM Shah Alam is the stop before, Bandar Baru Klang the one after, so if you're coming off the MRT at Bandar Utama you can now reach the front door on rail.

If you'd rather drive, both my units come with a reserved covered bay, so the Saturday-night parking hunt isn't your problem.

Sunday morning is the easy run. Coming on a Friday, leave before five or after eight and you'll miss the worst of the Federal Highway.

Central i-City, which is the practical half

The mall opened on 15 June 2019 and is the largest in Shah Alam, 365 shops over six floors, a joint venture between Thailand's Central Pattana and I-Berhad's property arm, and Central Pattana's first mall outside Thailand. Sogo, TGV Cinemas and a Village Grocer are the anchors, which in practice means a department store, a cinema and somewhere to buy the things you forgot to pack.

It keeps mall hours, roughly ten in the morning to ten at night, and the rides run two hours past that. So the order that works is dinner at the mall before nine, then out to the lights. For anything later there's a convenience store at Level UG of my block and a food truck outside the lobby.

The rest of Shah Alam is a short drive, the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque, the Blue Mosque, is one of the largest in Southeast Asia and worth the morning. Stadium Shah Alam, UiTM and the lake gardens are within the same handful of kilometres.

Who tends to stay with me

Three kinds of guest, in roughly equal measure. Families in for the theme park, who want to walk back rather than drive tired children home at eleven. People working in Shah Alam for a few days, which is why the fibre line in the Hyde Tower unit matters more than it might sound. And couples who wanted somewhere between KL and Klang without paying KL prices.

i-City is about half an hour west of central Kuala Lumpur, so it's a trip built around Shah Alam itself that gets the most out of being here, the theme park, the Blue Mosque, UiTM, the stadium, and the parks out towards Klang.

Coming with small children, and which tower suits a family

This is the case for staying inside i-City rather than driving to it, and it is mostly about the walk home. The rides run to midnight, children fade at about the point the photographs get good, and the difference between a ten-minute walk and a forty-minute drive is the difference between a good night and a bad one.

The building carries most of the rest. The shared pool has a shallow section for small ones, there is a playground on the facilities floor, and the Hyde Tower unit sleeps a third on a folding mattress. The kitchen matters more than people expect, being able to do breakfast in the flat, rather than queue for it, buys back an hour of everybody's morning.

There are a few breakable bits at reachable height in both flats. Tell me you're bringing little ones when you book and I'll move them before you arrive.

Which tower should I stay in?

Whichever one is closest to the mall bridge. That is the whole question.

Six towers here, Liberty, Hyde, Parisien and the three older ones. Mine are Hyde and Liberty, the two nearest that walk.

What time does it open?

Water park from eleven; nearly everything else from half three to half five.

Does anything shut on a Tuesday?

Just WaterWorld, and not in the school holidays.

Everything else runs seven days, so a Tuesday is a perfectly good day to come unless the water park is the whole plan.

What does it cost?

Per attraction, not per person at a gate. RM15 to RM65 a head for most things.

Malaysian rates; non-Malaysian run RM10–20 higher. Walking the lit park itself isn't on the price list.

Is there an LRT station?

Seksyen 7 Shah Alam, 650 m to i-City, 900 m to the mall.

It opened with the rest of the LRT3 Shah Alam Line on 29 June 2026. Some maps still show it under its interim name, i-City / Hospital Shah Alam.

Do I need a car?

Not any more, though it's still easier with one.

The mall, the theme park and the food are walkable from my flats. For anywhere else in Shah Alam, a Grab or the LRT will do it.

What's open at eleven?

The rides and the karting until midnight; SnoWalk and the horror house until eleven.

The mall shuts around ten, so eat before then. There's a convenience store at Level UG and a food truck outside the lobby for later.

How far is the walk to the mall?

A covered walk from the block, so a few minutes and no umbrella.

Both my units are in the towers nearest it. Liberty Tower connects to the mall directly by that walkway.
